Whitepaper - Monolith E:CTRM vs modular technology

The old logic no longer applies

Monolithic platforms have grown by adding functionality on top of old architecture for over twenty years, resulting in long implementation cycles, expensive customisation and software that struggles to adapt. In a 2025 survey of more than 400 energy and commodity professionals, 64 per cent said their E/CTRM does not support all their processes or commodities, and 71 per cent already mix vendor systems, internal tools and spreadsheets rather than relying on one platform (1). Most firms already run a modular stack.

This whitepaper sets out why the monolith model succeeded initially, where it falls short today, what has changed, and how leadership teams should approach the choice between centralised and modular architecture. The point is not that every firm should abandon its E/CTRM. The decision should be based on current economics, not on assumptions that were true a decade ago.
